Edina Squirt C White took home 1st place at the Jacob's Hope tournament in St. Cloud this weekend. Congrats to the boys on winning all four games and taking home the hardware!
Edina took down Buffalo 7-1 in our first game of the weekend. The victory was started and finished with goals from our defensemen. Wemer blasted one from the point in the first period and Sznewajs buried one in the third, both assisted by Tressel. The official score sheet says we held them to 3 shots on goal, which has to be a tournament record. I assume dinner at Red Robin was the real driving impetus behind the boys firepower.
After a good nights rest, Edina took on Farmington Saturday morning. The boys skated to a 5-2 victory, eager to get back to the Holiday Inn. The team took full advantage of the amenities for the following six hours, including a team room stocked with goodies, pools, game rooms and of course - the hot tub.
Saturday evening the team turned their effort to Sioux Falls. Edina cruised to a 7-2 victory, lead by Whitton who had a hat trick. The team decided to give Jill a pass for not throwing a hat on the ice, as one was not spotted on her head. The awkward scoring system the tournament utilized meant that three victories didn't secure our spot in the championship game. Thankfully Cottage Grove was able to hold off St. Peter, which caused a roar from the parents sitting by the pool.
After killing some time Sunday morning, the boys hit the locker room awaiting their opponent in the championship game, Prior Lake. The Lakers had gotten the best of us a month earlier, and the boys were eager to settle the score. Edina jumped out to a two goal lead, after Tressel and Gunnerud lit the lamp in the first two periods. Prior Lake ended up netting two in the third period, which pushed the game to OT. After a five minute 4v4 session, the game moved to a shootout.
Porter was a brick wall all weekend, and the momentum kept going. Prior Lake was unable to put a puck in the net. Varecka, who had tallied five points in the prior three games, was able to bury one in the back of the net to give the Hornets the championship.
For those keeping score, Hornets are now 12-2 in tournament games. Congrats boys!
After winning their first three games of the tournament, our team lost to Farmington in the championship game. Great playing and effort all weekend!
We kicked off the weekend, and our first game of the year, with a 4-1 victory against Hastings. Charlie knocked in the first goal with 3:59 to go in the first period. I know he was gunning for that "quickest goal of the game" tournament award. Auben's two following goals provided momentum into Saturday's game.
After a hearty lunch at Fireside Grill, I was a little worried the boys would be weighed down. While there may have been some lingering side effects from the large lunch, they were able to hold off Forest Lake in a 4-3 victory. Porter had to stand on his head and shut down a late game breakaway to seal the deal.
The boys jumped out to an early lead on Sunday morning against Shakopee, and were able to hang on for a 4-3 victory. After some midday rest, they were back to Rosemount for the fourth time of the weekend for our championship game against Farmington.
We knew Farmington had fire power, as they had tallied 22 goals through the first two games. We were able to keep it close through the first 15 minutes of the game, but ended up letting oppositions pull away in the end.
All in all a great start to the season!
